Artists Statement
Current work involves the exploration of kinetic processes in which sand
and
water, are used in conjunction with gravity and inertia to create sculpture.
The work evolved from a childhood memory of playing in the sand on the
beach. By picking up handfuls of wet sand and allowing it to drizzle between
my fingers, I was able to build drip-textured sand castles. Now my sculptural
work involves manipulation of the same materials and governing the simple
laws of physics in order to achieve a similar, yet more controlled "drizzle-
castle".
Fabricated steel and cast metal funnels are suspended from the ceiling.
Water and sand are added to the funnels which are set in motion. The sand/
water mixture slowly drips out, succumbing to the laws of gravity and
inertia,
and interacting within formal settings and physical parameters. The funnels
empty slow to a stop, leaving behind a sculptural by-product in the form
of sand structures. In time these structures will dry leaving only a pile
of sand, which serves as the foundation for future sand structures.
The process has a hypnotic effect on viewers, capturing their attention
as the funnels deposit the material , drop by drop, slowly building upon
themselves. By altering the formal characteristics of the settings and
positioning of the funnels, I create a narrative. This narrative describes
an accelerated model, resembling many natural geological formations. Yet
correlating to situations found in human urban environments. The cyclic
process of building, demolishing and rebuilding or development within
geologically-hazardous areas, are indicative of the issues addressed in
my work.
Ted Uran is an emerging Phoenix artist. Born and raised in Illinois where
he did his undergraduate work. Uran relocated to Phoenix in 1997 to continue
his education at Arizona State University and received his Master of Fine
Arts degree in 2000. He presently resides in the City of Phoenix where
he lives with his beautiful wife Brenda and the"Twelve Legged Trio"
Gouda, Aziago (ah-go), and Mocha.
